Two hundred years after its founding, the ASBC church saw the need for even greater involvement in its support of the area’s youth. In 2002, the church voted to form a separate Foundation that was to be a non-profit, charitable organization to expand the church’s reach into new areas. In 2005, the Foundation formally received its 501 (c) (3) non-profit status to award college scholarships to needy students, and was eligible to begin accepting tax deductible donations and bequest. In 2006, the ASBC Foundation received its first major bequest—the entire estate of Sister Jacqueline LaMarr Henry Green—the beloved director of the church’s Senior Choir from 1952-1999, whose dedication to Music Education covered 70 years.
The Foundation accepted over 150 applications from throughout the Washington, DC Metropolitan area for its initial class of Millennium and Legacy Scholars. Three students were selected to receive the Millennium Scholarship for $20,000 over 4 years. With these scholarships, it is the Foundation’s intent to not only that these students get to college, but get through all four years, as well.
The Foundation also awarded five Legacy Scholarships. These scholarships funded by individual donors who specify the amount and criteria (e.g., females in Math) included scholarships to four students by the Robertson Family Legacy Fund for $2,500 each. The Mobley-Wallace Legacy Scholarship also for $2,500 was presented to a student in memory of Mrs. Elsie Mobley and Mrs. Addie Wallace, the mothers of two of ASBC deacons. Additionally, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to three commendable students.
In years to come, the Foundation anticipates increasing the number of both Millennium and Legacy Scholarships. Don’t you want to be a part of this great educational commission to help needy students attain their dreams and their full potential? You may assist in this cause by donating via our ongoing fund raising efforts, or participating in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC number is 47662) through planned giving at your work place.
